Solar Energy

Our solar system has developed and grown over the years, we have learnt what works well for us. We welcome visitors who wish to learn from our experiences, or are just curious about what it takes to live off grid. Please make an appointment if you wish to visit.

Solar hot water

We have two solar hot water systems, one for the community house backed up by a propane heater, another for the 'Shower House' supplemented with a wood stove for use in the winter.

Solar Electricity

There are three large solar panel arrays for the main power generation. These connect in a central deep cycle battery storage and inverter system for supplying 110V AC to the community house and workshop.

The electricity is used for lighting, kitchen appliances including a refrigerator, and workshop power tools.

We also have a small solar panel that powers a well pump, this is used to help keep our irrigation tank full.

Wind

We have 3 small wind generators on top of the 'Power House', but they do not generate a significant amount of power.

Back up power

For periods of high demand we also have a backup generator that can be used to maintain charge in the batteries, it operates with propane.
